Hit Your New Year Goals
-
Arguably the grand father of Atomic Habits and one of the best books on behavior change. This book takes a look at what it actually takes to change your behavior and to normalize how even “exceptional” people also struggle with doing things we should do.
-
What if someone less gifted that grew up in worse situations and had a shit home life achieved more just because he wanted to. This book makes you take a long hard look at what excuses you give yourself and is filled with actionable challenges to help you actually get things done. Fair warning: This book will make you feel like you are a little bitch that likes to complain.
-
Hands down one of the best books on behavior change. Combining structural factors, environmental factors, and how you perceive yourself. This book takes a fully comprehensive look at how to build habits and is a masterclass in why systems beat self discipline every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

A very quick read that highlights the power of checklists and the importance of adding structure to tasks you feel are beneath you. Also has some very practical tips and tricks to make your lists more efficient and geared towards your goals. Fun fact: This author struggled to remember to buy life insurance until he worked with Marshall Goldsmith, the author of “Triggers” which is at the top of this page.
-
Do you feel distracted at work and people keep getting in the way of you actually doing your job? This book outlines tips and tricks to become a more effective employee and helps separate important work from noise. “So Good They Can’t Ignore You” gets you the job and “Deep Work” makes you a superstar.
-
Do you feel like there is never enough time in the day to do everything you need to do? Welcome to the world we live in. A popular productivity myth is that if you have the right system you can achieve everything. Unfortunately, you are mortal but there is value in finitude. This book takes a in-depth look at picking out what really matters in life.
-
I would describe this one as “beating a dead horse, the book”. While incredibly helpful for identifying systems thinking. If you are already somewhat aware how systems work and how they can be influenced, you can probably skip this one.
-
Essentially a manual for basic social skills that I read in my early 20’s but wish I read when I was 16. I like to summarize this book as “interesting people are not interesting, they are interested”.
-
Are you a parent and actually want to prep your child for the real world? Then you NEED to read this book! While this book has a general air of doom and gloom, Haidt and Lukianoff take a cold sterile look of what parenting has looked like over the past 50+ years and highlight where we have gone wrong (with the best of intentions) and ways we can fix things moving forward. The book also has a slight degree of snark which makes it very digestible.
-
What if a multi-billion dollar business owner wrote down every lesson he learned from failures in both work, home, and social lives? Well now you have a guidebook and instructions on how to find your own principles. This book also highlights the importance of failure when it comes to growth.
-
Are you frustrated with politics and individual politicians. Shock, surprise, it’s actually way more complicated than it looks. This book highlights and takes a detached view of what the world of politics is vs what it should be. I do not discuss politics unless the other person has read this book.
-
The single best “self help” book I have came across and currently holds the record of “most recommended book”. Packed with important concepts and fun language that would make your grandma clutch her pearls. This book perfectly outlines that not caring isn’t about not caring, it’s about caring more about specific things. I have read this book, cover to cover, at least 7 times.

People enjoy what they are good at, but we are not always good at what we are passionate about. One of the best career books out there and Cal Newport expertly lines out why wanting something isn’t enough to be successful.
-
An absolute must read in the 21st century. Between social media, food, and general vices being more sticky than ever. This book expertly outlines what addiction actually looks like and ways to combat our vices.
-
The best book on financial literacy since Dave Ramsey. Morgan Housel takes a look at why people do what they do, financially, and what this looks like from a short term and long term lens. An absolute must read for anyone that wants to be more financially literate.
